Another year of the match recently passed. I want to highlight one medical student’s experience with his match results. This student matched into one of his top five ranked programs in the specialty of his choice. Stop there and it sounds like a very successful match outcome, doesn’t it?! However, when I got word from him about his results, he actually seemed more disappointed than excited. I can’t say I was shocked, though.
I understood what he was going through because the exact same thing had happened to me. I had my eyes set so much on my top choice that I failed to see the best option right in front of me. Rather than noticing the program that was truly the best fit for me, I was valuing the wrong traits in a residency program. This medical student had done just that, too. I felt his pain, but I also knew his attitude would change once he realized how bright his future really is. It was only a matter of time before he figured it out.
